After applying for the sales rep position online, I was contacted by a recruiter, who gave me a very brief overview of the position. I was given the online iq/skills test to take, which wasn't easy. I was contacted soon after to have another phone interview w/ another recruiter. I was eventually set up to speak with the branch manager of the local office. After meeting with him, I was asked to come back in to shadow agents and sales assistants in the office. The background process was started, and I was given the opportunity to come back on "CALL NIGHT," which is where the agents come back after hours to contact their clients at home, to offer quotes on new business. I was given a HORRIBLE sheet to call, for it was full of business/work contact #s, when I was asked to call at 7:00pm and beyond. Needless to say, I wasn't very successful. As a follow-up, the branch manager basically told me that I SUCKED at calls. I didn't contest his observation, for not wanting to seem as if I were making excuses, but one of the other agents, ALSO felt that the list I was given was terrible. I was called back in, ONLY to have the branch manager tell me that he didn't feel I "REALLY" wanted the job. This was after I took it upon myself to contact one of the agents on my own, to have him meet w/ me off-site! I found it to be somewhat offensive that he would make such a statement. He basically said that I wasn't calling him enough. I didn't think in a corporate environment that "BADGERING" your future boss was a good idea. Regardless, I was asked to come back for "call night," only this time, I was given a great list of customers, with HOME #s. Needless to say, out of 13 contacts, I was able to get permission for a call back from 11!!! I was THEN told that I NEEDED to go to a city that was 2 hours away for an interview with the regional manager the NEXT DAY!! I hated the short notice, but knew that if I didn't go, it would probably give the impression that I wasn't serious about the job. The branch mgr. requested that I call him on his cell phone (which is how we communicated) to let him know how the interview with the reg. mgr. went. The next day, I drove to the reg. mgr., (a trip that cost me $80 in gas) and interviewed with him. This was last Wed. After the interview, I called the local branch mgr., as he asked, to de-brief him of the interview. He NEVER CALLED ME BACK!!!!! This morning (8 DAYS LATER) I received my "THANKS, BUT NO THANKS" email from HR!
It's not so much that I didn't get the job, but the fact that there was such a lack of common courtesy on the part of the local branch mgr., after asking ME to call HIM!! It's pretty cool when people show you who they are, BEFORE you have to deal w/ them. Thanks Liberty Mutual! Wasting the last 2 months of my life, is MUCH better than wasting the next 5 years!!
