Had a wonderful experience and conversation with the recruiter who was warm and kind during the initial phone screen and in follow-up communications via email. Had the next interview with the Hiring Manager and unfortunately, that did not go as well. The interview was initially postponed to another time that really was not an optimal time for anyone, so I wonder if that played a role in this experience. The Hiring Manager’s demeanor was low-energy and somewhat disengaged. I could tell within the first 2-3 minutes that she was “just not that into me” and proceeded to slouch and ask questions in a flat way. I’ve interviewed candidates before and the one thing I always say up front is, “It’s nice to meet you. Thank you for joining us today to explore this role. And please don’t be nervous! We just want to get to know you better.” And more often than not, the candidate relaxes and is able to be themselves and put their best foot forward. How can you tell the breadth and scope of someone’s talent and capabilities if you’re not playing a part in coaxing it out? I think that’s the difference between a leader, a supportive culture, and someone who is merely checking the box. The balance of the interview was nerve-wracking and a bit painful—I’m sad about it because I think Athleta is implementing some incredible programming and marketing and celebrating diversity and body inclusivity in such a meaningful and palpable way, but it doesn’t mean all key players are actually walking the talk in terms of celebrating other women through support and encouragement. Disappointing.

This was my first time interviewing with Athleta, and the screening recruiter felt disengaged and uninterested in me from the start. He never followed up with next steps, not even in response to email outreach. He only asked me 2-3 broad questions, nothing probing or detailed, before shifting to a monologue for 15+ minutes about Athleta's current strategy, sharing what I thought was quite sensitive business strategy information to a candidate who he seemingly had no intention of moving forward with. For a company that prides itself on its values, the experience was deflating and disappointing.
