Juneteenth marks a day of delayed freedom. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free. Months later, the ratification of the 13th Amendment formally abolished slavery across the United States. The history of Juneteenth reminds us that freedom and justice have not always arrived equally or all at once. It is a time to reflect on our nation’s history, to honor resilience, and to recognize the ongoing responsibility we share in caring for one another.
