Kenneth Mallari, a flight nurse in Rosebud, South Dakota, considers Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month important in his current role in EMS because he believes it is vital to highlight underserved communities in the United States who need higher levels of care. His dream after becoming a nurse was to become a flight nurse, and he achieved his goal through hard work. He loves proudly representing his culture and the diligence instilled in him has led him to be the successful flight nurse he is today. He also takes pride in passing down his knowledge to members of his community and promoting cultural awareness throughout the Guardian Flight footprint. Meet Lucas Rowe, a passionate flight coordinator and an invaluable part of our team. Based in Anchorage, Alaska, he began his EMS journey with Guardian Flight almost two years ago and has already made a lasting impact on his community. Lucas’ motivation is making a difference in the lives of others. He enjoys working with his fellow team members and ensuring patients receive the highest quality care they need. When working in dispatch, he stresses that communication is not only helpful but vital. He recalls a moment when communication was imperative while working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard. Due to dangerous weather conditions, Lucas and his partner attempted to facilitate the care and transport of a patient. This required constant communication with the Coast Guard, medical team and pilot to successfully coordinate landing times and receive information on the patient’s condition and helicopter status. Lucas believes flexibility, thinking out of the box, and being patient oriented are the essential qualities of a public safety telecommunicator in EMS. The ability to find a solution at a moment’s notice is crucial. As stressful situations may arise, Lucas advises all future dispatchers to find productive and positive remedies to relieve stress. He firmly believes in prioritizing self-care to continue providing care to others. Lucas exemplifies the vigilance and dedication that define our team at GMR. We are proud to have him as a valuable member of our team.
The theme for this year’s World Health Day is ‘My Health, My Right.’ Today is an opportunity to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to medical services, education and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination. We are committed to delivering rights-based services to all in the communities we serve, and we believe that no matter who you are, or where you are, you deserve timely, equitable and appropriate access to healthcare.
Two weeks ago, the Ways and Means Committee traveled to Denton, TX to hear directly from patients and medical providers about the challenges to accessible, quality emergency care in rural and underserved communities.
