CIT equips first responders with the skills to recognize mental health crises, de-escalate safely, and connect individuals to the right resources with compassion and professionalism. Through strong partnerships and continued training, we are working together to ensure our community receives the care and understanding it deserves.
Kailey Baker, manager of criminal justice diversion with Genesee Health System, emphasized the importance of removing barriers to support. "We talk about how they can manage their own mental health, especially with all of the statistics for first responders with mental health," she said. “We know that many of Genesee County’s most vulnerable residents, some who are working through mental health and/or substance use disorders, sometimes show up at food pantries seeking help, especially during a time when access to food becomes limited,” said Danis Russell, CEO of Genesee Health System.
Genesee Health System (GHS) is seeking proposals from qualified providers to deliver Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and/or Speech Language Therapy services for beneficiaries diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), under the PIHP specialty service benefit, and coordinate with Behavioral Health Treatment/Applied Behavioral Analysis (BHT/ABA) providers.

Genesee County is taking steps to address the issue by offering 16 beds at a crisis stabilization unit, where individuals can receive psychiatric services for up to 72 hours. Jennifer McCarty, Chief Operating Officer of Genesee Health System, said the goal is to provide immediate treatment to prevent emergency room visits and hospitalizations. "Those beds are essential. When people are having a mental health crisis, maybe they're not safe to go home and they know they need help and they need a place to go," she said.
"This Platinum Level Certification involved a thorough evaluation process of our CIT program under the leadership of Kailey Baker, our Manager of Criminal Justice Diversion and lead trainer of the program,” said Jen McCarty, Chief Operations Officer at GHS. “We’ve known from the beginning that this training program would add value to our first responders’ expertise and positively impact our community. We appreciate our law enforcement partners who continue to train and work alongside us to address mental health crises."
