Forget sunken treasure ships. There are more valuable things hidden under the ocean floor. Ocean Rig owns and operates two deepwater drilling rigs used for the offshore exploration and development of oil and gas fields, primarily for oil majors such as Exxon Mobil, BP, Statoil, and TOTAL. The company also provides contract drilling services. Its two semisubmersible drilling rigs, Eirik Raude and Leiv Eiriksson, are capable of operating in harsh climates and depth capacity of 10,000 ft. Major shareholders include Goldman Sachs (15%), Sinvest ASA (14%), and Morgan Stanley (10.5%). In 2008 DryShips Inc., led by Greek magnate George Economou, made a bid to acquire the company.
