The folks that work at the Carnegie Institution of Washington aren't exactly melon heads. The organization, known to the public as the Carnegie Institution for Science, supports scientific research in areas such as plant biology, developmental biology, Earth and planetary sciences, astronomy, and global ecology. It operates via six scientific departments on the East and West Coasts. The institution, funded primarily by an endowment of more than $530 million, was established in 1902 by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie (whose other philanthropic endeavors included the Carnegie Corporation of New York and Carnegie Mellon University).
