Ventajas

Staff helping people find permanent housing have an extremely difficult job, which they do well. They are often very dedicated and committed to the goal of housing people with special needs.

Desventajas

With government funds paying for housing and services, fundraising is directed toward inflated administrative salaries, not client needs. Dysfunctional, toxic culture on the administrative level keeps org from being more effective. Zero interaction between field staff and admin contributes to culture of resentment and distrust. Other housing orgs do more with less. "Office staff" are paid relatively well; people doing the hard work on the streets (often people of color) earn subsistence wages.

Ventajas

Step Up is truly a special place to work. The mission to support individuals experiencing mental health conditions and homelessness is not only powerful but is embedded in every aspect of the organization’s work. The team is compassionate, collaborative, and made up of dedicated professionals who really care about making a difference. Leadership is supportive and open to feedback, and there are real opportunities to grow and contribute in meaningful ways. It's inspiring to work alongside people who are so committed to creating positive change in the community.

Desventajas

Nonprofit work can come with its challenges—limited resources and heavy workloads at times—but the passion of the team and the impact of the work make it worthwhile.
