The decision to mandate fixed office days was misguided in the context of the Berlin office’s actual constraints. The space is limited, there are too few meeting rooms, and the environment becomes crowded and noisy—making it harder to do focused work and to collaborate effectively. This setup also creates avoidable accessibility issues. For colleagues who are neurodivergent or otherwise sensitive to overstimulation, the current office conditions can be cognitively exhausting (noise, interruptions, lack of quiet space, unpredictable seating/traffic). A policy that increases exposure to those stressors without accommodations risks excluding people in practice, even if that isn’t the intent. More broadly, the policy appears to be driven primarily by leadership preference and cultural conviction rather than by clear, local evidence that it improves outcomes for either the business or employees. If the company wants more in-person time, it should be justified with measurable goals (e.g., onboarding speed, cross-team coordination, cycle time, retention) and supported by an office environment that can realistically enable those goals. A more responsible approach would be: fix the infrastructure first (capacity, meeting rooms, quiet zones, sensory-friendly spaces), define what problem the policy is solving, and then test/iterate based on data and feedback, rather than enforcing a one-size-fits-all mandate in a space that isn’t designed for it.
