      Ventajas

      I joined CompassX from a mid-sized consulting firm and so far it's been a great move. I feel like my perspectives and experience are valued and are seen as a benefit to the company, and the people who I work with really seem to care. The work itself feels meaningful, with interesting projects where each win (big or small) seems to have a big impact and celebrated by everyone. Since joining, the practice areas seem to be evolving and maturing, and I've been able to sharpen my skills by being pushed outside my comfort zone at times. Unlike my last company, there are no mandatory CompassX office days, but I know where the leaders or colleagues are each week if I want to meet in person. I've also enjoyed the in person events and other team meet ups,

      Desventajas

      As it's a small firm, sometimes there can be missing pieces or gaps e.g. there aren’t always standardized tools, predefined templates or playbooks like at larger consultancies. Sometimes this means more freedom to do things your own way, but can be frustrating if starting from scratch too often. The teams are pretty lean so work can get busy for short bursts of time to meet client expectations. Also need to be willing to wear multiple hats or flex into other areas to keep the show on the road.

      Ventajas

      I joined in late 2022 and was immediately placed on a project. I have been happy with my project work and my experience with the overall company. There are a lot of opportunities to get more involved in the company and gain mentorship from the leaders and your peers. Whereas you can often feel insignificant at a big firm, you feel like you have a direct impact when working at CompassX (which can be a good or bad thing depending on your personality). I like that the company is local and also serves clients in southern California. It means less travel for us consultants and generally a better work-life balance. There are no outrageous utilization targets either (i.e., they are reasonable and incentivize the right behaviors). Benefits are good too. Besides the standard benefits, they offer a technology stipend (instead of giving you a company-issued laptop). The company also offers a 401K program with match. Compensation seemed competitive compared to other similar-sized firms. The firm also gives additional floating holidays when targets are met, which is a great perk. On a personal note, I was very pleased with the way that CompassX handled my PTO. I had booked an international trip for the holidays last year, but I didn't have enough PTO since I had just joined the company. I told my leadership about my situation and offered to do client work while traveling to minimize my PTO. I was fully expecting to take the PTO unpaid, but to my surprise, CompassX allowed me to let my PTO enter a negative balance. It was very generous of them, especially since I had only been at the company for a few months. Though I think it tells you the type of people who manage the company and how they care for their people.

      Desventajas

      Most of the project work is solo (i.e., individual contributor projects vs team projects). That being said, there is a lot of momentum to see solution-based projects rather than individual contributor or staff-augmentation work. I suspect that we will be able to get more team-based work once we have a larger client footprint. The only other con was that employee start dates are sometimes delayed to match with a project start date (to minimize bench time). This wasn't an issue for me, but I think others would find it difficult to coordinate. Just something to consider if you are in the process of interviewing with the firm.

We strive to provide a better work/life balance for our employees, and we appreciate that our local focus and client base in Southern California has contributed to this. Your feedback regarding project work being predominantly “individual contributor” is valuable to us. We are afforded strategic leadership roles on programs which is something we’d like to continue. That said, as you mentioned, we are actively working toward expanding our client footprint and elevating the work we do to include more team and outcome-based projects. We also acknowledge that coordinating employee start dates with project start dates can be challenging and are continuously improving our processes in this regard. We have worked hard to keep the gap to a minimum. We genuinely appreciate your positive remarks about how we handled your PTO situation and your recognition of our management's care for our people.
