With the increasing popularity and demand for rail travel, many jobs in this company are stable and "jobs for life" For union employees, excellent benefits with reasonable premiums and very good pay considering the actual work and effort required on a routine basis Free and discounted train travel (excellent value on the Northeast Corridor) Paid training with housing provided for certain new employees (conductors, engineers, dispatchers) On the job training encourages you to learn from older, more experienced workers, so as not to reinvent the wheel Due to a wave of retirements, many opportunities are opening for younger workers to take on important roles and the company does promote from within

Work-life balance? Fuggedaboutit. You may see your co-workers more than your own family. Transportation is a 24/7 business. If you're a new hire on an extra board you will have little to no social life outside of work unless your friends are also working odd hours like you. However, this is not a surprise and is made very clear during pre-employment testing, interviews and training. Lack of and slow pace of operational decision making (being reactive rather than proactive). Improving this would dramatically reduce the time and impact of service disruptions. Those decision makers seem to forget these trains have hundreds of PAYING passengers that will choose other travel options if you keep jerking them around. Customer service employees are not provided with enough information for passengers during extensive delays Surly, rude and incompetent front-line employees that are quick to say "I Don't Know" or "That Ain't My Job" to basic questions but on the same hand, may not be empowered or have the resources to step outside of their job descriptions to find information and help customers. It's embarrassing to watch those interactions as a fellow employee. Nepotism. This is slowly going away as the mothers/fathers/grandfathers/uncles retire and the company is forced to hire QUALIFIED and COMPETENT individuals Departments are run like kingdoms. Depending on where you work, non-managerial staff may not even interact professionally with other departments, let alone know how they contribute to the company

The culture is horrible it’s a very demeaning please. They will fire you for anything. Harassment amongst employees and by management to their employees Is extremely high. I have a MBA degree and I still can not move above the customer service level. I’m a union member and you have to pay union dues to work a non management position. The union Reps work for Amtrak to so there is a conflict of interest. The union is TCU in which they defend the company 100x harder than they do their members. TCU is not organized very well. The pay is fairly well but after union dues in medical and taxes are withdrawn your net income makes it look like you are making at least 15 to 17 an hr. As far as Work culture at Amtrak it is fueled by many rumors and those rumors are more affluent then your resume .
