      Entrevista

My major is computer engineering, but I have some interests in books and publishing. Hence I applied for this position. I submitted my resume and cover letter to the email address indicated on their company website. In two weeks, I got a call from them and was invited for an interview. On that morning, I went to their company headquarter. There were 3 others also coming for interviews. One of them was applying for a position of HR manager, and another one for a sales position. As for the remaining one, I don't know. After filling the application form, we were guided to the floor where their chairman's office is located. Yes, the chairman would interview us! I was the second one (out of the four coming) to go in the chairman's office. I was surprised when I was in the chairman's office. There were two groups of people there, each group consisting of two or three people. I was seated on a chair just in front of the chairman's desk, facing him. He scanned my resume and asked one or two (I cannot recall exactly) questions about my background. Then he said to the group of people on his right hand side that my English may not be proficient enough for the position. (I must admit that he might be right. I am from China and doing my postgraduate education in Singapore, so I am not a native English speaker.) At this moment, I realized that the group on his right hand side was the panel who would interview me. Indeed the panel asked me a few more questions. I cannot recall all the questions they asked. But I do remember that they asked me about my conference and journal publications, since I have a few conference publications during my graduate studies. They also asked my status, since I have not finished my studies in my graduate school. I explained to them that I can convert to part-time student if I started working for their company. Throughout this process, the chairman was talking with the other group on his left hand side about their business. In particular, the focus of their talk was on how to improve the quality of a journal they publish. From time to time, the chairman would give some instructions to both groups. It seems obvious to me that the group on the chairman’s left hand side was there reporting to the chairman. I was feeling not very good. Most of the time, I was sitting there, listening them discussing their own business. The chairman made the judgment in the very beginning that my English is not qualified for the position, and the panel were not very interested in me, either. Fortunately, the so-called "interview" lasts around 20 minutes only. Then I was guided out of the chairman’s office. The lady guiding me out apologized to me, saying that the chairman was quite busy this morning. I stayed outside and talked with the one applying for the sales position for a while. He was the fourth (and the last) to be interviewed on that morning. When he was going in the chairman's office, I left and met the one applying for HR position at the lift. She got the offer, and was told to start working from the next month. She was very happy and I was happy for her. Overall, my interview experiences were not good. I think I should get a better treatment :)
