      Entrevista

Was contacted about setting an up an interview with the head designer. We interviewed through a zoom call. The call went well so they then asked for a design project to be completed. I don’t love doing free work at this stage in my career (10+ years), but I did the assignment over the weekend and turned it in the following week. They then told me I needed to complete a personality and knowledge test. In all the jobs In all my lifetime, I’ve never had to take such a ridiculous test (this includes high school and college). The “high school” test involved pattern recognition, but was so difficult I ended up just guessing my way through it because I didn’t have the time or patience to be quite frank, and this is coming from someone with an excellent academic record and gpa. There were 6 modules in total, each more lengthy and cumbersome than the last. It took me HOURS to complete, and this was after spending an entire weekend on their “project”. I nearly rejected the position then, but chugged through it and turned it in. After going through all of that, I never received a response afterwards, even after reaching out. HR should really reconsider their approach. They will be turning off and eliminating good candidates based on outdated testing.

      Entrevista

I applied for a position through a recruiter, providing several PDFs of my previous work. The company expressed interest and scheduled a Zoom interview, which was initially missed on their end but later rescheduled. The interview went well, and I was told they were very impressed with me. I was subsequently assigned a project. Despite it being Q4, my busiest time of year, I committed myself to the task because I was genuinely excited about the opportunity. Upon completion, I was told the project was exceptional, and they invited me for an in-person interview. I received a pre-trip questionnaire requesting standard details, including my birthdate for airline arrangements. I hesitated to provide it due to concerns about age discrimination, but I ultimately complied because it was necessary for travel logistics. The next day, I was informed the position was “on hold after careful consideration.” This decision came after 6-8 weeks of extensive communication and after being assured my work met their expectations. When I voiced my concerns about potential age bias, the recruiter reached out for clarification. The response was disheartening: I was told my work didn’t align with their Designer level. They claimed my mood boards lacked clarity and runway trend representation—claims that were not only inaccurate but contradicted their earlier praise. My mood boards were meticulously crafted to blend the target customer’s interests with current runway trends, incorporating elements like fringe, feathers, and oversized roses—all themes of the season. Adjustments were made thoughtfully to suit various customer demographics. The sudden critique felt like a convenient excuse rather than genuine feedback. If my work was truly subpar, it wouldn’t have progressed to the point where they were arranging travel for an in-person interview. What’s more telling is that the position remains advertised, and they continue to recruit. This contradicts their claim that the job is “on hold.” It’s difficult not to draw a connection between the timing of providing my birthdate and their abrupt change of plans. I conducted thorough research on the company, including their current designers. My portfolio not only met but, in many cases, exceeded their standards. I bring years of experience, formal education from top institutions, and a proven track record of success. I was excited about this role and eager to contribute to the team. To have my work dismissed and be subjected to what feels like age-based discrimination is both disappointing and unprofessional. I’m sharing my experience because I wouldn’t want anyone else to endure the same treatment. If you’re seeking a workplace that values diversity, celebrates talent, and fosters a supportive culture, I recommend looking elsewhere. In my entire career, I’ve never been treated this way by a prospective employer. It’s a reflection of their culture, and I’m relieved I didn’t end up there. Sometimes, a missed opportunity is a blessing in disguise.
