      Entrevista

Had submitted my resume in February 2011. Was contacted in November 2011 by the hiring manager as to whether I was still interested. Timeline as follows. mid November - 45 minute technical phone screen which consisted of mostly Java questions and past work experience. late November - 30 minute interview with recruiter - what are your 5 strengths, what do you think it means to work in a start-up? Since I did not have start-up experience, I assured her I thought I could be successful and was ready to work in a fast paced start-up environment. early December - hiring manager contacted me and told me that they are still bringing in other candidates and they'll see how that goes. early January - contacted by hiring manager for another phone call. He re-iterated about the fast-paced start-up environment and that was their concern about me. I again re-assured him that I knew what I would be getting into. late January - went in for on-site interview from midday which went as follows: 1. an hour relaxed lunch with some members of the team 2. 45 minute interview with VP of Engineering (make sure you remember the names of the people you went out to lunch with and the name of the restaurant) 3. 45 minute interview with hiring manager which mainly talked about soft skills 4. 45 minute interview with senior architect. Was required to find errors in a page of Java code, white board a design from my previous work, solve a puzzle and some more Java questions. 5. 45 minute interview with senior engineer. He wasn't very prepared as he was filling in for another interviewer who didn't have time. He asked about previous experience, object modeling and some SQL questions. 6. 15 minute interview with recruiter who went over the benefits etc. That evening I was contacted by the hiring manager and that they need to check references before making any decisions. I sent the references that night. 7. Early February - hiring manager called and said that references were all good but from the beginning their concern was that I didn't have start-up experience. Therefore, they could not take the risk of hiring me. What most surprised me is that it took interviews spanning over 2 months to come to their final decision based on the very concern they had from the start of the interview process. Overall, seemed like a collaborative environment of hard work but fun. Was told to expect 50-60 hour work weeks.

      Entrevista

Applied for a Canadian role. Was interviewed by a US-based recruiter who does not understand Canadian employment law. I hold an open work permit (which requires zero employer sponsorship or cost), but the recruiter explicitly rejected me on the call, stating they 'only hire Citizens or PRs to avoid sponsorship.'

Applied online, then offered online interview. The interviewer seemed completely disengaged through the whole process, and never even hinted at a smile once. It was a real shame and a waste of an hour - I should've stopped 15 minutes in to be honest. Kept asking questions and re-asking the same ones 5 minutes later. Going off and back on camera. His attitude wasn't selling it, and him telling me the company was "overly American and intense" wasn't helping either.
