Newly transplanted to Florida, no contacts, no acquaintances. I knew where I wanted to work although they did not have a job posting. I sent in my resume, waited a few days & called to speak with the director of the department. She said she had received my application & would be in touch with me. I called two or three times to remind her that I still really wanted this position & she told me to come in for an interview & a coding skills test. The questions were all correctly answered but one they disagreed with & I was able to argue my case for using a new & improved code which was a higher payer. Ultimately they agreed with me & offered me the job. Just what I wanted! The workload was twice what I was used to but I did what I had to do to catch up. Worked there for 8-9 enjoyable years.
