      Entrevista

I really wanted for this review to be a positive one. It started out so, well, positively. I had the usual phone screen and then had the first official virtual interview. That interview was followed-up by an onsite interview at a location nearby my house. The contact that would be hiring for the position requested that before our meeting that I put together a 30, 60, 90 that would include how I would "crack open a territory". Easy. The whole thing took less than an hour. I met him at a local restaurant on a Friday and we had a great conversation. I even had lunch on the company which is exceding rare this day and age. I remember a time where companies used to fly someone out across state lines to interview. This is before 'the dark times' I guess. I told myself that provided they don't do anything too heinous, regardless of if I got an offer or not, I would leave a positive review. I could hardly believe that I may be in an actual healthy, functioning, humane hiring process. I was sort of put off at the end when he said "I'll be in touch, we have a few more candidates to interview". Traditionally, this has always meant I was not going any further. Trying to stay positive, I put it out of my mind. Then a week went by and no follow-up. I reached out to the person I did the screening with, as I believe reaching out to a decision maker should only be used in extreme circumstances. So I reached out to the initial screener and crickets. So not knowing whatelse to do, I reached out to the HM. He informed me that the person I initially spoke to quit which was the reason for the delay. He noticably did not mention anything about the status of my application. In that email, he gave me a new contact that also did not respond to my requests for another week until I CCed the HM. Magically, he responds 2 hours later with a phone call. On that call he explained to me that the HM enjoyed our conversation and I was a top candidate, but they went with someone else. So, 2 weeks to get a decision that was likely made a week or two prior. I'll tell you this, if someone involved in the hiring process leaves the company, that is a very bad a sign. Not only is it embarassing for the company, but in many cases it can throw yours and everyone who applied's candidacy in flux. To summarize, I'm tired of this trend where candidates are left in the dark for weeks after an interview. Especially when these employers typically already know which way the wind is blowing. It is extremely disrespectful of the candidate's time and energy. I don't care that it is a tough job market right now. If someone makes it into the actual hiring process, they are owed prompt updates within the same week they interview. Tenable almost had a decent review from me, then they had to completely show me how little my time meant in the end. Bear in mind, this HM drove an hour and change and bought lunch to come meet with me. To me, if he was willing to do that, the offer should pretty much be in-hand. Maybe I got ahead of myself, but it just seems a bit petty if someone else can interview and completely off-set such an endeavor. According to what I was told, I was not given an offer based on something extremely nitpicky that could be easily and quickly trained. A mere stylistic difference that could have been overcome. These companies today do not want to onboard or train and it's sad. They want you to come in and know as much as possible, but not too much, as your direct report doesn't want you to outshine (and possibly replace) them. Everyone is gatekeeping and that is one reason why the job market is as cutthroat as it is.
