I applied for Staff Engineer on March, 2021 and the recruiting team was quick to set up a Coding Challenge, then Life Story followed with 4 hour long Pair Programming, Technical Problem Solving and Technical Deep Dive sessions.
Coding Challenge was of easy level sorting problem where I wasn't required to worry about time/space complexity and just focus on however you resolve the challenge.
Life Story is where I had to answer the question of how I got into software and what I accomplished throughout my career. I worked on fairly unique projects as lead engineer so I believe I made a good impression that the recruiting team tried to set up the final stage of interview. However, it took 2 week to set up. I had to remind them I was waiting for the dates twice.
On final stage, in pair programming I had to implement a secret santa that would match people with others. My advice for others here would be using a Debugging tools with breakpoints. I didn't use debugging tools and just used printing variables which was a big No for the challenge.
Technical Problem Solving is just a System Design interview where you have to explicitly say things like Queues, Load Balancers, Race Conditions and Data Modeling techniques. Even if you have defined them in you CV does not mean much until you use them in this interview.
Technical Deep Dive, in my experience, this is a somewhat for formality which does not add much value to the overall interview. In my case, the interviewer were more interested in legality and use case of my project rather than technical parts.
The interviewers were very nice and I really enjoyed the interviews. Even though I got rejected, they set up a feedback session where they walked through the inteviews and why I failed.
My only advice to anyone who will attend interviews is that prepare as you would do for any FAANG. Shopify expects very similar answers.

pair programming with interviewer to solve a problem with design first, and write a service and run and test with postman. Then ask questions about how to scale up the solution.

At the beginning of the meeting I made a couple of basic mistakes. I put the mic near the keyboard in which I was typing my notes so the other person could hear the keystrokes, and I was no directly looking at the camera because I had an external monitor. These were rookie mistakes I know.
But the interviewer got totally mad about this. She didn't ask for a change nicely. She was totally out of herself. She literally asked "are you even interested in this call?"
I reacted and fixed both, but the interviewer kept harassing me until the end of the meeting even tho I fixed it and apologized about it very quickly.
Bad predisposition overall, like if the interviewer was just meeting an obligation to interview me because I was a referral. At the end of the meeting I felt she was super violent with me.
The first thing she said was basically "you're not a good match because you don't have enough experience with this position and we look for experienced people". But this is nonsense because I was referred to this position.
Terrible awkward experience. I had a good first impression of the Company, but after this, not anymore.
* applied through smartrecruiters
* filled out detailed questionnaire related to my experience, providing examples of coding background and technical leadership at FAANG companies.
* was then asked to do a phone screen without ever talking to a reecruiter
* asked recruiter for salary and team details before wasting anyone's time on interviewing, they said it is "impossible to know the salary"
I am not going to waste my time on some problem that has 0 real world application without knowing what Shopify would approximately pay. this interview process is one of the strangest I have seen in the entire tech industry.
