Thanks for being honest and taking the time to type out this review. This sort of honest critique gives us a chance to get feedback and possibly improve the way we do hiring.
You’re right about one thing - we have many, many skilled and capable individuals applying to every one of our career openings. Like you said, we have an average of 1200 applicants per posting. That’s more than most Fortune 500 companies get, and we’re nowhere near their size.
Because of these constraints, we have to use some unconventional hiring practices, like one way video interviews and the “question interview.” We’ve found that they work very well in helping us find who would fit in our culture, though sadly, I am sure we miss some great people.
We really like the “question interview” because as a culture we value insightful and original questions. Our CEO uses the “question interview” because he can get deep insights into a person based on what they ask him. We do not tell this to people for a reason: if they knew it was coming, they would “study the test” instead of actually showing us who they really are.
Given the constraints we operate under, if you have any specific recommendations about how we can improve our hiring process, we would love to hear them. We are always looking to get better.
You can email our CEO, JT at this email: jt@bookinabox.com.
He would love to hear from you.
