The interview was a two step process. First interview was with the Principle Investigator and the research coordinator that was leaving. It was through Zoom and fairly easy. The second interview was with HR. The asked for my CV again that detailed all the laboratory experience I had. The hiring process took over a month after I accepted the job offer.

TLDR: Bad experience, disorganized HR. I applied online in April 2019 and had a phone interview in May. I’m a Canadian citizen, so during my interview I notified my interviewer of the (free, very easy) work authorization I would need, and followed up afterwards with a memo; I was assured that it wasn’t an issue. They offered me the job in June. I accepted in July. At the end of July, shortly before I was supposed to start, I was informed that HR reinterpreted their policy on hiring Canadians and they were considering rescinding the offer. Several weeks passed, during which time my previous visa (which I’d calibrated to align with my scheduled Rutgers start date) ended and I had to leave the country. About a week after I was supposed to start work, they rescinded my offer. HR never apologized to me or accepted responsibility for their error. This was a serious personal, professional and financial setback for me. Future applicants, I strongly suggest that you continue to apply for other positions, and do not retract your other applications, even after you formally accept a job offer at Rutgers.
