      Entrevista

Interview process was kind of a nightmare for me. I’ve thought about writing this review for a while, but figured I would share this so that Metromile can improve their process in the future. I passed a phone screen with the recruiter and the hiring manager before being brought on for an interview. The on-site was fairly straightforward and everyone was very approachable. They asked me to come in for another interview and prepare a presentation for the team. Please note that I spent a lot of time perfecting that presentation. A day before my final round, I was told less than 24 hours before my presentation that I would not need to interview and that they extended the offer to someone else. Two comments here: first of all, how can you judge two candidates without an equal amount of work? The entire process could have been handled much better in my opinion. Second, never let your candidates put in hard work if you don’t plan on seeing the presentation at all. If Metromile is committed to being “a great place to work” perhaps it should focus on giving a better impression to its candidates.

I found the job description (I think via LinkedIn) and applied. Then I received a phone call from a recruiter at the company for a screening interview. After that interview, I spoke with the hiring manager on the phone. Then I had a follow up with the hiring manager because he needed more information. After the follow up, I was brought on site to give a 30 min presentation followed by 30 min of Q & A for a panel. After that presentation, I had 1:1 interviews with each person in the panel.

Please prepare a presentation from your past that will help us understand how you would approach a problem and how will you go about launching a feature end to end. You will have 1 hour for the presentation. Plan to present for 30 minutes and allow 30 minutes for questions. Your audience will be members of the Product team and some engineers and/or designers. We are more interested in understanding your thought process, so mockups are optional. For the presentation, it's recommended to bring it in on a laptop or to email it ahead of time to Matthew Chamberlain in PDF format; either way works fine. Some questions to help with your presentation: What does your minimum viable product look like for this feature? Which stakeholders will you work with and how would you involve them? How would you implement the solution (high level user stories etc.,)? Please provide a detailed example of a product story with use cases. What are some of the edge cases you will think about? How will you validate your solution?

      Entrevista

It started with a conversation with my would-be boss, who I got in touch with through a mutual former colleague (I reached out first). He gave me a detailed explanation of what the team was looking for, what the role would be, and where the company was headed. In the first on-site stage I had one-on-one interviews with most of the product team and the Director of Design. In the second stage (about a week later) I met the last member of the product team, a couple engineering leads, and a lead + VP on the customer service team, people I'd be working with day to day. Every person was courteous, passionate about their work, and had different aspects of my career and skillset they were interested in exploring. The final stage (again, a week later) was an hour-long presentation to the entire product team showing how I would approach a product problem and put requirements together. I had been given a scenario and had a week to prepare. This definitely was the most difficult day because the team grilled me (in a nice way) and dissected my assumptions. I came away from it feeling (1) I had showcased my strengths applicable for the specific role, (2) they correctly saw my weaknesses and could make an informed decision for their team. I then had a one-on-one with the Director of Product (boss's boss) to round everything out. My future boss called me the next morning, said I was a very strong fit for the role, and made me an offer! I accepted on the spot, my paperwork started that evening (Friday), my email got setup Monday, and I started the Monday after. I even got a welcome postcard sent to my home, signed by the product team :)

A VP tells you they need something done ASAP. How do you manage their expectations based on your current priorities?
