It was a long process, but the recruiter and I had a good rapport. They were a big reason why I joined.
My interview with the team was mixed. I met with the last person who had my job who asked me to “go ahead and give my spiel". The actual hiring manager was cheerful, which put me at ease.
Meeting with the head of the department was uncomfortable. They greeted me for the final stage of my interview. When they saw me, they gave me a once over, and proceeded to have a stern attitude. I was dressed casually, but presentable, which is what is stated in the invitation.
Unlike the other panelists, this person did not prepare any questions or talking points, so I defaulted to talking about myself. They talked a little about themself and asked me if I had any questions. I asked the most basic questions I could think of just to keep the conversation from flat lining. I was running out of things to ask (their answers were curt), so I asked one more question to which they responded “that’s it?”.
Why did I take the job? The recruiter built trust with me. I was also given the impression that the company values and environment were geared towards growth.
What you should take from this review? This sort of interaction with a panelist (especially the head of the department) should be a red flag to you, not just for this company, but any company. The head of the department very much influences the tone of the rest of the team.
