Recruiting staff for summer schools is quite complicated and depends on the numbers of students, cancellations, staff not arriving and other issues. What might be interpreted as desperation would be urgency, as we are duty-bound to provide certain staff to student ratios. We have a robust recruitment process which allows for last-minute appointments as well as those taken on well in advance of the summer school. Some staff are recruited after the first date as we could easily have more students later in the programme and we need to be efficient in our staffing of the schools.
