I applied for a Data Scientist role, but ended up being interviewed for a data engineer position. The conversations spanned multiple weeks, so I'm surprised that it ended up turning into a data engineer type of role and interview. I think it makes sense to ask questions that pertain to a particular job role that is being applied for rather than being assigned to a particular job role.

Entrevista
The recruiter phone screen was straightforward, and she got back to me very quickly to schedule a technical interview. At the technical interview, they tested SQL and Python skills with real-world examples. The technical interviewer was very supportive and provided feedback to move the process along when I got stuck. The recruited followed up with a phone call within a week.

SQL example: Given 3 tables linked with shared identifiers, output names from one table that correspond to the project with the highest budget from another table.
Python: For a matrix with a certain number of columns, determine whether each element is a palindrome. Additionally mark rows for which all elements are palindromes.

Entrevista
I only applied to the role, but I reached out to learn about the company from a data scientist. My interaction was so toxic.
I reached out with general questions about how data science was used there, tech stack, what excited the person about working there, and for what skills they were looking to hire.
The response was, "are you looking for a referral, because the answer is no". I explained that I was genuinely interested because the company is doing interesting work.
I was told that I was the problem because of the questions I asked, which to mean seemed like great, thoughtful questions from some genuinely interested in the company.
Needless to say, I pulled my application. If this is generally how the company operates, I would encourage people to not waste their time. People should find other companies that are respectful of all people and flattered when people reach out to learn about their work.
