      Entrevista

Interactive brokers never disclosed the salary range. So I did an interview without knowing what a salary may be. This is very unusual because the first thing HR may want to know from you is your salary expectations and whether or not it may fit. When asked about my salary expectations during the interview, I just told them - I am looking for market rate and that's it. Nobody has drilled down as it usually happens when talking to HR. That was rather a bad sign than good. I will explain later why. Then arrived in the office I was met by department lead (Asian guy) and he offered me a tea, and then we went straight to the business. He gave me a bunch of tests, very basic I would say but very long. I've spent there like a whole day crunching all these logical tests. After that, no feedback nothing, despite I did relatively good. Lesson learned - big companies like Interactive Brokers have hundreds if not thousands of applicants for open positions. Therefore the competition is very strong there. But, it probably does not worth your attention, because you are not going to get a salary better than the middle-sized or small company can offer you. I would never apply to big companies anymore. After putting dots together after some days, I've decided that I was not really considered seriously for this position. The department head probably had somebody in mind by that time, he just needed to follow the process and demonstrate a certain number of qualified candidates interviewed. He never talked to me during those 4 hours I've spent there solving all their tests. He just arrived in the end, took my papers and disappeared. Another sign of their intentions was missing salary information. That was the first time when HR did not tell me the possible salary. And no more interviews in the environment dominated by Asian or Indian specialists. They are tending to hire them alike.

7 stage interview process, took 2 months. personality test, logic test, then 5 interviews. Ghosted after final interview follow-ups. Very frustrating considering the pay band for the position and the work hours requires regular weekend work along with fully in-office starting at 7am. HR would say interview would cover certain topics at stages, but on showing up, other items were actually covered.

phone screen, leetcode easy, leetcode medium, leetcode hard, then hiring manager (behavioural). no linux...thought programming would be a nice-to-have for what seemed like junior position. Prepped for other companies so got lucky I thought.

      Entrevista

The process was very long drawn and lasted almost 4 months. I completed a PI behavioral assessment three days after sending in my application in early July. This was followed by two separate interviews with both the HR and a member from the hiring team in the US. I then took two exams: a Unix skills assessment exam and a logic test. Because these were timed (IIRC, I was allowed only 30 minutes each and they recorded my video/sound as well), I wasn't able to complete every question. This was the hardest part of the entire interview process. I supposedly did well based on later comments from some members of the team. I didn't hear back from them until early August. After which, I spent the next two months having video interviews with their international team in the US and Europe. After having completed three more interviews, I had one face-to-face with the local managing director in Hong Kong, whom I had a casual but insightful conversation with. I was told that they'll pass my application to the CEO for approval, so my impression is that the overall feedback from the team was positive. They topped it off with a last minute interview with another member of the team in APAC about a week later. This was apparently setup to address any lingering questions I have, which I found to be accommodating. Unexpectedly, communication went silent after this last interview. Out of the blue, I received a rejection call from the HR a month later, who informed me that they have picked another candidate for the role, and that she had no other opportunities available for me to explore further. This last communication was somewhat generic and disappointing. It could have been more helpful if they can provide a little more feedback on what I fell short on, especially after having gone through 7 separate interviews with the team over an extended period. If they didn't find the person to be a good fit, then perhaps they should have ended the process right away after the 2nd or 3rd interview, which can help save time for both parties. Instead, the process became quite lengthy and there was a general lack of transparency throughout. I was often left in the dark and received no feedback post-interviews. I had no idea if I've cleared the last round until I received an invitation email from the HR for the next. The waiting time between these invitations ranged from one week to almost three weeks. The process can vastly be improved if they can shorten this lag time and provide more meaningful feedback shortly after an interview within 2-3 days. In addition, I often found myself having to answer the same questions on separate interviews. To avoid this issue, it may be more time-efficient if they can schedule panel interviews instead of multiple 1:1's. On the positive note, every one of the interviewers I met with had been very friendly and we had productive conversations together about the role, the team and the company. I definitely had my chance to shine and I hope that I had left a positive impression on the team overall, despite not knowing what their general consensus was with respect to my candidacy.
