      Entrevista

The reviews below from Feb to May 2016 do a good job of summarizing the process, so I'll focus on things they missed or stood out to me. There were seven interviews. First a "Take the Interview" with your webcam, then a phone interview with a recruiter, then 2 30 minute phone interviews, and finally 3 in-person interviews (2 behavioral, 1 technical). I felt as though once you got past the webcam interview, you'd need to screw up big time not to get to the final round. This is because, with the exception of the one technical interview, everything was behavioral and conversational, to the point where I left wondering exactly what skills or experiences I was being evaluated on. If you've ever used a Content Management System or Google Analytics, the tasks they ask you to do with the Hubspot software are a cakewalk. Turns out they were testing for culture fit, and that was the reason they gave for rejecting me. This was pretty frustrating, because you can probably figure out whether an employee's personality and demeanor line up with the company's culture by interview #2 and save both sides a lot of time and money (they don't compensate you for travel to Cambridge if you're not in the area). And unlike interviews at other companies where I could pinpoint where I went wrong and use it to improve in the future, I felt as though the 4 hours-worth of interviews and 8 hours of travel were a waste of time. At $35,000, the starting salary is low. They say you get a promotion every few months, but didn't say if they came with a salary bump. Either way, the average tenure seems short enough that I can't imagine it getting much higher than that. The office was well-furnished and had beer on tap. One last thing that stood out to me, as a non-white person, was the lack of diversity. I'm used to being in school and work environments that are 80% white, but all of the 50 or so employees I saw were white. Hubspot is growing rapidly, and I have to wonder how management could see how other tech companies like Apple and Twitter get raked through the coals for their lack of diversity and think the current situation is at all sustainable. A year after "Disrupted" pointed out the lack of diversity, it seems as though little has changed. (A broken clock is right twice a day, I suppose.) I am not the sort of person to cry racism, and I try to go into every new experience with an open mind. But when "culture" seems to be at the core of the hiring process and so few technical skills are tested, Hubspot has little excuse for being this ethnically monolithic.

Nothing memorable - for most questions you could give a boilerplate answer relating to tech support or experiences where you had to explain something over the phone.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful review, and for the push on diversity--we absolutely have room to improve there. One of the things we are currently working on as a leadership team alongside the recruiting team is a process whereby we clarify what culture screening includes and entails and find ways to ensure that we actively seek out folks who are culturally additive (meaning they make our organization better with their input and ideas versus "fitting in") and that we are really clear about what is meaningful there (such as a willingness to think outside the box and challenge the status quo, the ability to be solve for our customers, etc) and what isn't (the school you attended, the music you listen to, etc) which can dovetail very quickly into solving for sameness versus hiring truly dynamic and diverse candidates to help us grow as a business. I'd love to connect with you to hear your feedback on where we missed there, happy to chat by phone to learn more about how we can get better here if you're open to doing it. If so, my email is kburke at hubspot just shoot me a note and we can figure out a way to get better with your feedback, both from this review and hopefully from a follow-up conversation. I'll also see if I can get you some more granular feedback on your interview process from our team so we give you a better return on the time you spent with us. Regardless of whether you choose this route, thanks for your feedback and for taking the time to interview with us. Sincerely, Katie

I had a 3-step interview process that consisted of a brief phone call followed by a zoom demo consisting (quick chat and mock customer support call) and finished it off with an on-site 2 hour interview with 3 managers. The whole process was quick and efficient with awesome hiring managers that were very communicative and responsive. I had an awesome experience and would recommend anyone on the job hunt to apply to HubSpot.

They were looking to hire quickly - so the process was expedited. Interviewed late one week, and was interviewing in-person in the middle of the next week. (I am not local, I drove 6+ hours to be there) They had me interview with a few different people. Most of them were very pleasant. (Especially Caroline Ostrander & Lauren DeSoiza. Lauren in particular was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable.) One of them, a former Apple Store manager, was not. Ultimately, the day after the in-person interview I was informed via e-mail that I was not offered the job. Disappointing, but not the end of the world. In the e-mail, I was told that they would provide some feedback on my interview performance if I wanted it. I figured that might be useful so I obliged. I e-mailed my HR contact asking for interview feedback. No response. I waited 7 days, and e-mailed him again. He replied this time and apologized, stating that he was very busy and got caught up with some other things. Okay. He gave me a date and time when he would call me back the next day. No call. I e-mailed again. No response. I attempted to call him a few times and left a message. No response. And each time I called, his phone went directly to voicemail, no matter the time of day I was calling. Not entirely sure why they say they offer interview feedback if they are obviously not actually interested in providing it. That and Apple store manager guy really soured me on my experience.

They asked a lot about customer service experience naturally. Also had me do a demo exercise with their website. It's been a little while, so I don't remember many specific questions that were asked.

Be ware! Things will move along quickly and then all of a sudden come to a halt. They pride themselves on having a great company culture but overlook highly qualified candidates who possess a substantial education and willingness to learn. The process is thought to be great initially when you go through the interviews and they will move you along. If one of the managers doesn't care for your style of answering questions or is intimidated by you, good luck moving on and getting an offer from the last round. Very false facade of what they preach and actually represent.

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to write a review and I'm sorry that you felt that your interview experience wasn't consistent throughout. Our goal is to be incredibly thoughtful about the methods by which we evaluate candidates' fit for the role, including considering feedback from a cross-section of interviewers with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Any decision made would be inclusive of the entire interview team, and includes a thorough debrief process. Regardless, I want to ensure our team is learning from candidates' experiences and will be sure you take your feedback back to the team. Thanks so much for investing the time to interview with us and best of luck in your next steps. Best, Becky
