I applied for the Senior PM, General opening because GitLab seemed great, but I didn't know where I'd fit best and the GitLab team did a phenomenal job guiding me through the process.
I started with a preliminary, 30-minute phone screen where we discussed the GitLab culture, what I was looking for, and presumably to get to know each other a bit.
My next interview/video call was with a Director of Product, which was articulated as a means of gauging where my experience would be the best fit within GitLab's product categories.
After these first two calls, I was scheduled to speak with 4 more people ranging across the organization's departments that seem to have had some relationship or tie to the product path I was now on.
Each of the video calls was 30-45 minutes in length and all of the team members were very warm, welcoming, and friendly. Each of the team members were clearly experts in their field or domain and asked challenging questions. Although the calls weren't easy by any stretch, every team member managed to make me feel very comfortable, as if we had already known each other for at least a few weeks.
The "Deep Dive" call was easily my favorite call. I had the privilege of working with another PM on an idea that I proposed and had an opportunity to experience what it was like to work with him. The entire call was fun, friendly, and productive. Even though this was a big part of the PM interview process, I had virtually zero stress because the teammate did such a great job at walking me through it and was very personable.
Towards the end of the process I was scheduled for a 7th, final interview with the VP of Product. This last call was equally enjoyable as the rest and included another unique thought exercise that really made me think and even gave a few laughs in the process.
I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process. Although a bit long, it flew by and I found myself excited for the next call each time. I was absolutely shocked that I could apply for a "General" position and actually end up receiving an offer for a specific role that I was passionate about.
