A GitLab recruiter reached out to me through linkedin and scheduled a video screening interview. After this went well, I sent my resume to the recruiter and they scheduled a technical interview a month later. The technical interview went smoothly and within an hour of completing it, I received an email congratulating me as well as two more interviews scheduled with an Engineering Manager and the Director of Engineering within the next 2 weeks. After these interviews were complete, I received an offer within the next week which I gladly accepted.
Everyone was extremely polite and professional throughout the interview process. I thought the technical interview component was really well done, since it mirrors the type of work you'd perform as part of your daily routine, rather than some tricky whiteboarding problem.
The only downside to the recruitment process is that it can take a long time, although in my case, I contributed to the length because I delayed some of the interviews because of scheduling conflicts.
Overall, it was a great experience, and it seems like a fantastic company to work for, based on other Glassdoor reviews as well as other factors such as their complete transparency and ability to work remotely.

The technical question was to view a merge request for a new change to an existing ruby on rails application. The merge request contained some deliberate errors, so your task is to comment on the merge request and provide feedback as you would in your normal daily routine, such as giving possible ways to solve the issues. The next step was to implement your suggested fixes and commit them back to the repository, making sure all tests pass.
The other interviews with the Engineering Manager and Director of Engineering were based on the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, and Result), including some behavioural questions. Nothing surprising here, just make sure you have a few good STAR based answers that highlight your abilities.

Four interviews in total: - 40 minute screening call - 90 minute technical interview - 60 minute behavioural interview with hiring manager - 60 minute behavioural interview with HM's manager All of the interviews went well, and I had some great positive feedback along the way. The last interviewer indicated they would make a decision about next steps within 2 days. It has now been four weeks. I have followed up with the recruiter and have heard nothing. It seems like I've been unsuccessful - it happens! But all it'd take is one tiny email response from the recruiter to let me know and provide closure. Throughout the process each of the interviewers talked about GitLab's values, and these values are why I was interested in interviewing here. Sadly, despite pushing them so hard, it seems like they don't abide by their 'transparency' value.

I had a very poor interview experience overall. Initial phone interview to discuss my experience and the role. Was given the salary range, that seemed to be above market.
After 5 rounds of interviews and 3 weeks, I was ghosted. No reply to follow ups or responses to emails.
What makes it even more potent is that there is a very high expectation that candidates study the company values (CREDIT) and have detailed knowledge of the handbook and process.
In my case the handbook process was not followed and in my opinion ghosting candidates is highly unprofessional. I am very disappointed in how the company conducted the process.
