The interview process included an initial call with the recruiter, a call with the hiring manager, a call with 2 team members, a call with 2 cross-functional partners, and a presentation for the hiring manager & director. In total I met with 7 people.
I enjoyed the conversations I had with everyone there but the interview process was just too long. I started the interview process in October 2023 and the whole process lasted 3 months. In the first call, I was told that the entire interview process would last 2-3 weeks.
For the final presentation, I was given a very broad prompt of providing recommendation to optimize their website. I believe that companies should get rid of these presentations altogether. Or at least narrow the scope. With the hours spent on the presentation, in addition to the interview time, I've given up countless hours for this drawn out interview process that I cannot get back. I think asking candidates for samples of their work is reasonable, however with the time it takes to research and put together a presentation, it essentially felt like Fender is asking for their candidates to perform unpaid labor.
Lastly, I was frustrated by the communication and engagement from Fender. Several times, I was promised updates by a certain date. The day would come and I would not receive any response from Fender. Only until after I've followed up, I would receive an update and it would still be later than promised. It's frustrating to be waiting for an update and not hearing back in a timely manner. It gives the impression that the candidate's time is expendable.
