      Entrevista

Applied online, got an email for a 30-min phone call from one of the principals in the practice after 2 months. The first phone call included things like talk about your resume, 60-seconds elevator pitch about your phd research, followed by some questions about my phd research, and some other questions about my previous internship experience. The last 8 minutes was for me to ask questions. I had a lot of questions about the company and the career path there, and he took the time to thoroughly answer them. Since we ran out of time, he said that I can write him emails to ask more questions or we can schedule another call. I ended up just writing him an email with several more questions, and he replied in detail. Then the second 30-min call was a video chat with another member of the team, which was after about 1-2 weeks. The video chat went very well. Interviewer was very friendly and chill, asked about my current projects and also talked about his phd work, spoke honestly about the hard work you have to put in to do well there, and asked if I have work authorization in the end. Then about another 1-2 weeks later, I got an email invite from HR for an on-site full-day formal interview. The full-day interview included one-on-one 30-min chats with 6 people and a 1-hour presentation with a lot of Q&A. They were very interested in my presentation and stopped me at any slide to ask questions. The 30-min chats had some technical questions relating to my coursework, which was the hardest part for me because I haven't looked at coursework in the past 3 years. Vague memories did help. I recommend brushing up some coursework basics relating to your major before the interviews. Lunch was at their office cafeteria. I should have prepared more questions to ask during lunch. In general, having a lot of questions would really ease the conversations. Offer was sent to me in 3 work days. I am impressed by their efficiency and sincerity. Overall, I enjoyed the interview process, which was very efficient starting from the first point of contact. The people I interacted with were very friendly and smart. Although the full-day interview was quite exhausting, they did ask me if I wanted to take a restroom break/coffee break before the presentation and sometimes in between the back-to-back interviews. I thought that was very generous and considerate. The breaks were sufficient for me.

I completed three rounds of interviews — two remote video calls, first with a senior scientist and then with a managing scientist — and was subsequently invited for an onsite interview. Unfortunately, the organization of the onsite visit did not align with my expectations. Less than 24 hours before the interview, the schedule reshuffled, and the meeting was set in Natick during a January snowstorm, With a high risk of travel difficulties. In practice almost all of my conversations still were virtual, despite the travel. What added to the confusion was that the onsite location was neither the office I had applied to nor one where the team is primarily based. Even my host and another scientist had to travel from neighboring states to meet there, which made the arrangement feel inefficient. The HR interview was surprisingly strange. I was asked to discuss technical aspects of my research — essentially giving a brief technical overview — and to repeat information that was already included in my application. Although it mentioned that they already had all the info from my initial application form! many of the same questions were asked again. This interview felt unusual, as HR interviews are typically focused on administrative or cultural fit rather than technical evaluation

The interview process spanned three months from the initial phone screen to the final round, largely due to slow and inconsistent communication from HR. Responses often took weeks, and when they did arrive, they were typically to say more time was needed to schedule the next step. The first round was a 30-minute phone interview with someone who had joined Exponent about two years prior. The second round was a virtual interview with a principal-level scientist. The final on-site round felt excessive for the position. It lasted seven hours and included: A one-hour technical presentation with Q&A; Individual meetings with seven interviewers; A lunch session. Most interviewers were professional and well-prepared. Senior staff in particular asked thoughtful, well-structured questions and provided sufficient context. However, two interviewers, both relatively new, stood out for the wrong reasons. One seemed to attempt a McKinsey case-interview style question without proper setup, leaving it confusing and irrelevant to the role. Another focused the entire session on a topic I had already disclosed was outside my expertise, showing no interest in exploring other areas of my skills or knowledge. Overall, while some parts of the process were fair and constructive, the length, HR delays, and unprofessional behavior from certain interviewers made the experience unnecessarily frustrating.
