The interview process took so long. I originally applied in May. The first interview was in June and the second and third in July. The first interview was a phone screening. The questions were pretty basic and it was several weeks before hearing back about a second interview. In the second interview, it was a group interview where candidates were meant to ask all the questions and they informed candidates the day before that other applicants would be on the call. This perhaps would be more normal in an environment where a team task was required for the interview, but in this context, it was just strange and made me not want to work there. It did not make me feel valued as an applicant. Even worse, there was an internal applicant there, so it all felt like a huge waste of time. The internal person completely dominated, making it clear they knew all the ins and outs of the organisation and on a named basis with everyone on the interview call. I should have said no to a third interview after that! Reluctantly, the job market during COVID is hard so I agreed to a third interview. In the third interview, we had to prepare a presentation in advance. There was no guarantee you would be selected for a third interview, it was based off the project alone. The project was a 20 min presentation which took hours to prep. They did not offer any compensation for our free work. In the third interview, questions were not prepared in advance. There were lots of awkward silences where the interview panel clearly did not know what questions to ask. They made a point during the interview of saying they prefer to hire internal. The questions they did ask seemed like they were looking for advice from someone that they knew they wouldn't hire - their feedback was about a point they never asked me about once. What a waste of time. Overall, it all felt extremely unfair and unprofessional. The organisation all clearly is not structured in a sustainable way, they are far too reliant on volunteers that they hope will share the same passionate vision as their core team. I think I dodged a bullet!
