Very extensive online questionnaire. Takes about 1.5.hours. set aside your time
Once you complete it, a Sales manager will call you for a screening interview. You have passed the first part. Your in store interview will be conducted by two different sales managers and you will be asked to step outside and begin the sales process with a potential buyer. Look on You Tube for a few examples of what CarMax is looking for. It is a fact finding mission which begins with the customer to get their car appraised. You are looking for clues to begin to connect. Such as bumper stickers that might give you a topic to ask them about such as a bumper sticker for a child's sport or school ... CarMax will want you to ask them to tell you about it. OH I see you have an honor roll student ... what grade is your.child in? It might give you a chance to say ... are you looking to purchase a new family car?
Then you will be asked to help.sell the features and benefits of a car they choose. Relax and be friendly and smile. If you goof up it's okay to stop and say oh gosh ... I'm a little nervous, I meant to say .....
Then they will either say ... thank you. Will Call you. But if they love you ... you will meet.with the store manager. You will do a urine sample for a drug test. And offered a job. It happens fast. It's a 7 day a week work store, know that weekends and nights will. W mandatory. If you ask for special treatment, its almost impossible for them to accommodate your schedule. There are some stores that offer part time but rare.

Short phone screen, then was asked to the location for an in person interview. Asked 8-10 behavioral interview questions and then was asked to show the managers a car like they were the customer.

Website provides personality test/profile. After you complete that you are invited to a phone interview with a recruiter. They will schedule an interview to the site. Interview with Manager and then GM, visit the lot and showcase professionalism and sales abilities
After doing a lengthy personality assessment online, I did a phone interview. The phone interview went well and I was invited for an in-person interview.
At the in-person interview, I had an extensive conversation with the sales manager, David. I thought it went really well. After that, I met with two other salespeople and we did a role-playing session where I greeted one of them and gave him an overview of a car on the lot.
After that, they said I'd get an answer in the next few days. I never did. While it's obvious that I didn't get the role, Carmax lacked the professionalism to at least send me an email letting me know that I had not made the cut.
Due to this experience, I will not be shopping Carmax the next time I need a new vehicle.
