I was excited to attend an interview after receiving an invitation from the company, confident that my qualifications were more than sufficient to succeed. However, during the interview, I was asked whether I would be comfortable removing my headscarf while teaching. When I inquired if this was a requirement, the interviewer casually mentioned it wasn’t, stating they were just "checking." But deep down, I knew this would likely lead to rejection due to cultural bias. It’s baffling how, in India, we take immense pride in our diverse culture yet struggle to allow others to practice theirs freely. Ironically, the interviewer, who wore a saffron thread on his wrist symbolizing his own identity, had the audacity to question mine. This mindset reflects how individuals, though educated with degrees, often harbor limited and discriminatory thinking. The following day, I received an email stating I wasn’t "qualified enough" for the position—despite being overqualified. The attitude displayed by such a reputed company is both unreasonable and disheartening. It highlights the glaring absence of diversity and inclusion, something that organisations must address to truly embrace all communities within their teams.
