No direct application - recruiter saw my profile on the Workopolis site and presented me directly after notifying me of their intent. I then received an initial screening over the phone with HR. Rather pleasant. I was immediately notified of details for subsequent onsite meeting.
Arrived at the office, and had to watch a health and safety video first before being allowed to enter through security. Obviously a very institutional approach, and observation was buttressed by seeing a display next door set up for the company's centennial.
HR onsite interview - very easy, but more engaged and detailed - was followed immediately by interview with hiring manager. I got the feeling the latter was just going through the motions, as start was delayed and it appeared as though her mind was already made up. This was confirmed when she declined to give me her business card at the end of the interview - that is normally a standard courtesy, and HR had already done so.
Rather abrupt rejection notice received the following week by telephone. Even though Lavalin is an engineering company, some lessons in manners would probably be worthwhile for their management.
