There were several stages of interviews. The first few were very positive and multiple candidates were interviewed simultaneously, which took a lot of the pressure off and even made it sort of fun. Made it to the final interview, which was one-on-one and that was not a positive experience for me. I felt immense pressure to impress and to say the exact right thing. In the initial interviews I felt an openness to express our individual identities, like they were considering who we were as people along with our skill sets and qualifications. The final interview felt very corporate in a way I had been surprised not to experience through the first few rounds. I believe I made the mistake of answering “a challenge I had overcome” a bit too honestly. My answer was overcoming mental health issues. I was asked if I thought it would impact my ability to do my job and I answered that if anything helping others helped me. The reason I think this was the turning point is that I saw a distinct change in the interviewer while discussing this and afterward they became fairly cold to me. Perhaps this was the individual I was paired with an not indicative of the company as a whole, but I left knowing that I wouldn’t be getting the offer and regretting disclosing such vulnerable information.
