I was very excited to get this interview because I was getting ready to relocate to the Bay Area, specifically Alameda and I have worked in academic environments previously and loved them. I had written it off because it took a month to get a call, but they did call and I did interview, although it turned out to be a formality. From the first conversation I pretty much knew I was not genuinely being considered. No questions were asked about when I would be relocating, salary requirements or anything else that would be expected of a typical interview. Still, I held out some hoping knowing I would be here soon and could meet them in person, because I felt the phone interview really handicapped me. I understand that schools can be legally obligated to post jobs that are already earmarked for internal candidates but it's not much fun for people who have to go through the interview process just as a formality. I could be wrong about this and someone more qualified could have come along, but I have so much relevant experience that I don't think it was a case of not being qualified. That said, I do respect organizations that promote from within and I'd still love to work for them. The only negative thing I can say is the professional thing to do would have been to let me know they'd selected another candidate weeks ago, as a courtesy. I put a lot of effort into preparing for the interview and I feel I deserve better than to be left hanging. So far, it's been almost two weeks of radio silence and I don't expect to hear anything else, but I could be wrong. The first call took a month.
