The East of England officially has the cleanest bathing waters in the country 🌊 Today the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced a record-breaking 96.3% designated bathing waters have been rated ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’ across our region. From the Humber Bank to the Thames Estuary, our region’s coastline is home to some of the UK’s cleanest beaches and swimming spots – something we take pride in and recognise how valuable this is to communities across our region. 98% of these coastal bathing water spots in the water company’s region are rated ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’, including 100 per cent of beaches in Lincolnshire, Suffolk, Essex and North Norfolk. Earlier this year, we announced £80 million of investment to improve bathing waters by 2030, including major storm spill reduction schemes and targeted studies at inland sites to identify potential sources of poor water quality. This work will be supported by a further potential £56 million of additional funding from 2027, which will be put into schemes to protect and enhance water quality. And while many factors that affect bathing water quality are outside of our control and operations, we’re committed to investing and working with agencies to ensure all our region’s bathing spots continue to thrive. We’re progressing plans for a new reservoir in the Cambridgeshire Fens - a vital part of our £11 billion investment plan to secure water supplies for future generations 💧 Our region is not only the driest in the UK, it’s also one of the fastest growing. As climate change brings hotter, drier summers and more intense rainfall, the pressure on our water resources continues to increase. While we continue to reduce leakage and support water efficiency, our long-term assessments show that new water sources are essential. Once operational, the reservoir will supply water to up to 250,000 homes, helping to meet future demand and protect sensitive environments like chalk streams. But this project is about more than infrastructure. We’re collaborating with local communities and regional partners to shape a new Fenland destination - a place where people and nature can thrive together. As part of this, we’re currently gathering local perspectives through our ongoing consultation, which runs until December. To find out more visit https://lnkd.in/eJHMgbka
October is Black History Month – a time to celebrate, reflect and learn. And this month colleagues have been marking the month with a series of events – from speaker sessions and video discussions to themed food events and colleague spotlights. But our commitment goes beyond October. Our employee led group Embrace provides a safe and welcoming space for colleagues from ethnically diverse backgrounds and allies all year round. They play a vital role in fostering inclusion and our colleague and group lead Rosie Kaur has shared her experience: “Through my involvement in Embrace, I’ve found opportunities to meet people and exchange experiences with others who share a passion for creating a more inclusive workplace. Black History Month is an important milestone, but our commitment to inclusion is one we uphold all year round.” We’re proud signatories of Unison's Anti-Racism Charter and Business in the Community's Race at Work Charter. Our region has just experienced a record-breaking hot and dry year, with the driest spring and summer since 1976 and the warmest summer on record. We're the driest region in the UK and with a growing population, protecting our water supply is more urgent than ever. And although our region has received some much-needed rain in September, this was the first month with just above average rainfall since January 2025, meaning levels in the reservoirs, rivers and groundwater sources are below normal for the time of year and much more rainfall is needed to fully replenish these sources. In fact we’ll need more than 100% of the usual rainfall every month until next April - this will mean we need more rainfall over the next six months than we’ve had across the entirety of 2025 so far! For decades, we’ve been making significant investments in water resilience to make sure we’re ready for drought - making sure there are plentiful supplies of safe, quality water for now and in the future. This longstanding investment in resilience is one of the reasons why we didn’t reach the triggers to implement restrictions this year. And as part of our biggest ever business plan, worth £11bn, by the end of the decade we will complete our strategic pipeline which will transport water from wetter parts of our region to the driest areas that need it most, as well as finalise plans to begin building two new reservoirs. Today marks the start of #Unblocktober, a month-long campaign committed to driving awareness about how we can protect our waterways from pollution through responsible drain management. With a growing population and rapidly changing climate, our sewers are already under extra pressure. However, this is made worse by the improper disposal of things like cooking oils, wet wipes and period products down the drain. Every year our teams clear around 35,000 blockages— 80% of which are completely avoidable. Through our Just Bin It campaign and the launch of our proactive enforcement programme we’ve brought to life the scale of the blockage challenge. With the help of hedgehog-like devices that have been deployed into our network, we’ve been able to track the source of the problem to inform our work with customers to change their behaviours in hotspot communities. We've already seen a significant reduction in the number of wipes - with the hedgehogs clearing more than 18,000 wipes from our network. But the work doesn't stop there.
