Ventajas

The people you work with are terrific. Everyone is very helpful, willing to lend a hand, explain something, help you with a project. Free lunch on Fridays, free parking. Four weeks vacation to start. Decent health/dental plan and you are eligible right away. RRSP at 3 months. The company's products are well engineered and sales are growing.

Desventajas

The boss. President Greg Johnson is a micromanager in every sense. He wants to know what you are doing today, right now, and why you aren't working on something else. The company hired a sales and marketing team over the summer to expand the company's opportunities. As of February, all three are gone. One quit, two fired. He demonstrated no knowledge of basic corporate marketing practices, and showed clear disdain for people who were very clearly just trying to do the job they had been doing for years at other companies. Rather than trying to learn, being open to new experiences or approaches, he applies his engineering-based approach to everything. If it doesn't fit, he will berate you and question you until you acquiesce, or quit. Just about every month, someone is fired. You never know who. People who have been hired are later subject to unrealistic expectations, or not doing the work they were hired to do. The president is involved in everything in the company. You aren't left alone to do your work. The company has doubled in the last two years, and Mr. Johnson clearly cannot handle the extra responsibility or extra people. He is condescending, rude and/or hostile to his employees. Mr. Johnson clearly has his favorites, and they are the people who do what he says. He promotes them, deserving or not. Upper management that disagrees with him have returned to non-management positions simply because they are tired of dealing with him. I would normally say "if you can work here without dealing with Mr. Johnson, you'll be ok" but that is simply not possible. I do not know how HR or Mr. Johnson can continue to interview people in good conscience given the toxic culture he has created. Stay away. No vision coverage.

Ouf! It's hard for me to read this one, and I'm sorry you had a rough time during the time you spent at RBR. We had a big hiring spree in the year you joined, and we didn't do a great job of identifying those who would enjoy the rapid pace and intensity here. Our leadership team has grown, as has the rest of the team, and while we are not a some nirvana-like environment, I know that our staff are happy with the direction we are taking. I wish you all the best in the future. greg

Ventajas

Company culture of continuous improvement and professionalism. All of our tools are modern and efficient. Great branding and a sense of pride in the product and company's reputation. Headquarters is in Ottawa, but there are other global offices and remote working is supported very well. As someone who considers myself a professional in my field, it is great to work with others who hold high expectations of themselves and recognize great work.

Desventajas

Very few cons. It's an engineering and product development company, and the spirit of optimization and innovation is carried into the company culture. Feedback is encouraged, and problems are expected to be fixed and/or improved. You need to be open-minded and willing to do your job better as you grow with the company. I'm excited to be at RBR and would recommend it to others.

Ventajas

RBR is a great company to work for, regardless if you're based in the main office or remote. There is a strong sense of family and a strong expectation to contribute. There is a high level of integrity and positive morals here.

Desventajas

The rapid growth of a small business means things operate at a fast pace and with constant change in search of better efficiency and/or process automation. This combined with the highly technical aspect of the products, might be a bit much for some to keep up with.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review. Responding to these, especially when they are personal criticism of me, isn't always fun - but I and the entire team are always trying to improve. The team is indeed a strong one, and your contribution to that is appreciated. I hope that our 2020 employee appreciation awards will help us all nominate those around us going above and beyond!
