Ventajas

Hired me after a long layoff, and was very pleased they did. At the end of training they give you a car and most of the equipment you need to do the job. Good chance for overtime in the Spring/Summer/Fall seasons when construction is heavy. Good work for a single person who likes being outdoors.

Desventajas

You have three days to complete up to at least 20 'tickets' , as you rush around to complete them you lose track of time. You'll be in the middle of traffic in a busy city street. You'll be out in the worst snowstorms, you'll be near downed power lines. The in class training is too short and crams your brain and the on-the-road training is too short. I found out after that they expect people to leave the hourly pay is low for that reason. You have to pay into the insurance a bit which is expensive at the pay scale. There is a rolling 'on-call; where you have to drive out in the middle of the night, and still go out in the morning to clear jobs. The holidays off are just the big three. Like long distance trucking, it doesn't look like the type of job you should have if you want much of a home life.

The nice thing about working as a Utility Locator is that you can work independently. I used to start working at about 6am, and would stop working in the late afternoon.

Desventajas

Most locators are required to be on call for a week around once a month. The on call work can be brutal at times. When on call at night, you are still required to cover your daytime shifts. If you are in a busy area, this might mean working 16 to 18 hours in a row, with only a few hours of sleep before covering your normal shift the next morning.
