Ventajas

You get to learn to love the residents. You get your schedule a month in advance. You get certified in First Aid and CPR.

Desventajas

The company can pop you for overnight- and as a student, they didn't care that I had class at 8am- you were theirs until 530am. The staff was horrible- yes, there is abuse and neglect. You try your best to keep the residents safe and happy. But if you're not in a staff's "clique," then chances are they will leave you in dangerous situations alone during a code, or ultimately blame you for a behavior. Favoritism among upper management. If you don't smoke- consider yourself an outcast. You're more likely to be called into a supervisor's office over gossip control than you are to be called in for serious situations. I haven't seen so many cover-ups since I saw a make-up shelf at CVS.

Ventajas

The students at Advoserv were generally great. At times it can be a very fast paced working environment, but once you establish positive relationships with the students they are less likely to respond negatively or have behavior problems. Depending on the group home and shift that you are assigned it can be a very fun and lax environment.

Desventajas

The administration was not very supportive of staffers. They did not usually get involved in behavior treatments unless in extreme cases. Some Case Managers were illusive and very ineffective. Advoserv was always short staffed, so it is not uncommon for you to be forced to work a double shift. Unless they've changed their compensation policy, you are not paid extra for being forced. With constantly being forced it was hard to have a life outside of work.
