Recent interaction with recruiter during a screening for a Project Coordinator position. While I was pleased to apply for this position, I inquired about an open Assistant Project Manager position, as I have seven years of industry experience, but was met with blundering negativity from this recruiter. The screening started with disengagement and long moments of silence, as if he was not fully prepared for our call. There were no verbal reactions to my answers to his simple questions, none of which were related to skills or job duties that I have performed throughout my work history. When asked about the Assistant PM position I was told it was not possible with no degree. This was not a problem, as all companies have their either / or rules, but left me curious about how I could navigate career growth within the company. When asked about opportunities through the channel of Project Coordinator I was told, “You wouldn’t be promoted in six months or anything.” This is fine (and normal) but not at all what I asked. While I had expected to hear about the programs offered and boasted by TDIndustries - tuition reimbursement, mentorship, and employee ownership - it seemed at that as soon as I wanted to explore a path to growth, the recruiter completely disengaged. I am not interested in pursuing a career with TDIndustries in any capacity after this meeting but am left with the strong impression that my rejection from further interviews with actual construction professionals was due to my focus on career growth. This recruiter was unable to properly engage with a potential candidate, was unprepared, and unprofessional. This was an unfortunate waste of my time that left me feeling disappointed in what seemed to be a healthy work culture.
