The internal recruiter stated that I would be given a two-hour take home code assessment. That was then switched to a 30 minute live-coding exercise. Lattice changed from a system that allows candidates to take an assessment at their convenience to one that requires candidates to find excuses to be absent from work.
Nothing detracts from focus like an interviewer looking over your shoulder. Also, the change delayed the assessment by about a week.

The problem required knowledge of retrieving data from API endpoints and parsing the resulting JSON. Typical coding assessments give the candidate data in a structure like an array or matrix or linked list or graph. Unless you have data retrieval front-of-mind, you will not do well.

I usually don't leave reviews and I have talked to recruiters on and off for a couple of decades now, this one was probably the worst phone interview I've ever had. I recently had a phone interview with a recruiter from the company, and unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing. The interview felt more like a formality or box-checking exercise rather than a meaningful conversation to assess my qualifications. Whenever I asked questions, the responses were extremely brief—often just one sentence—followed by awkward silence, making the entire conversation feel uncomfortable and unengaging. It seemed as though the recruiter was just going through the motions, which left me feeling that my time and effort weren’t valued.

I had a conversation with one of the engineering leaders where we talked about my past experience in similar roles and what I would be able to bring to Lattice. I then had to do a virtual on-site where I went through a coding challenge.
My wish is that there was another option for the coding challenge that didn't involve people staring at me while I go through a coding problem. As someone with anxiety this was incredibly difficult, since the entire time I'm trying to solve the problem, all I can think about is "am I taking too long?", "Do they think I should be faster at this?", "I'm pretty sure they think I'm not good at this".
I understand some people thrive in those types of high-pressure situations, but some people don't. And since part of the actual job doesn't involve high-pressure coding while superiors watch, it's probably not the best way to get an idea of how well someone can solve a problem.

A React-based coding challenge where you are building on top of a bare socket.io based application.
