Informal interview set up via a mutual connection. It turned out there was a misunderstanding about my skillset so I was not the right fit for the open role. I was told I would be a good fit for a different role, but there were currently no vacancies of that type. That part was fair enough.
However, the interviewer made a comment which reflected discriminatory expectations about working mothers. I try not to mention that I have a child in interviews to avoid just this kind of situation, but was forced to disclose a period of maternity leave. I had not asked for any special treatment, nor was I going to, but it was apparent that the interviewer assumed I would and that he viewed that as an inconvenience. I was pretty shocked and it made me feel very uncomfortable about the culture. I never followed up about other future roles, despite the fact that I would really have liked to work on Hive's products and had very relevant experience.
This happened a while ago but I was too afraid to raise a complaint as I could not afford to risk burning bridges with any potential employer at the time.
