I was first contacted by their HR department and had a preliminary phone interview with one of their recruiters. She was incredibly friendly and gave wonderful insights about the job and company. The job description posted on their website described the role as a mixture of social media and article writing. Although I did not have a marketing degree, I do have a masters degree and have worked as a writer for my entire career. The recruiter told me this wasn't an issue, and sure enough, when I perused employees who worked there on LinkedIn, most did not have marketing backgrounds either. I made it through the first round and spoke with someone in the marketing department next. This interview was pretty different from the first; the person I spoke with was incredibly dry, gave very vague, non-descriptive answers whenever I had a question, and made me feel like speaking with me was the last thing on earth she wanted to be doing. She also told me the job "probably" wouldn't include ANY article-writing, which was the main reason I applied and made it through the first round. Instead, she quizzed me on social media analytics despite knowing that was not my background. I tried my best but it was very awkward. Unsurprisingly, I was not asked onsite for a final interview.
