R Street's administrative and management capabilities are a mess. Some in management are very bad at communication, providing little feedback or clear direction. Those in some positions are there because of inside connections, not merit. R Street is trying to grow for the sake of growth, which is not a good long-term strategy. The organization is feeling the effects of unsustainable growth, with a lack of focus on expertise and the quality, not quantity, of policy production. There is significant office politics, including power struggles and differences in opinion on the desired direction of the organization, largely emanating from the non-policy part of the org. This had led to increased turnover over the past year and lower morale. While feedback is encouraged publicly, in practice those who do not agree with ideas pushed by favored individuals will be disciplined. This hampers honest conversation and learning about the best way to improve the organization.
