Candidato de entrevista anónimo en Baltimore, MD

I was in contact with the hiring manager for a couple days. We were able to speak on the phone and had a short phone interview before planning an in person interview. The in person interview was 3 short 1-1 segments with 3 different members of the staff; the hiring manager, lead of the payroll department, and a high ranking officer.
- What kind of experience do you have with payroll?
- Are you willing to work mandatory overtime at quarter end and year end?

Short and sweet. Met with the Manager at the time briefly and then with the owner after that (guess the Manager liked me). Went over what skills I had (barely any) in payroll processing. Got offered the job a few days later.

Brief, to the point. Open and direct when discussing demands of the positions and the client mix. Phone screen first with CEO, in-person with COO and supervising Client Controller. Got the sense that there have been issues with previous hires overrating aptitude/attitude. Not a beat around the bush environment.
- Are you willing to grind out the mundane tasks?

The people I met when I went in for the interview seemed like a great team to work with. They were polite, understanding and seemed to be very interested in my skills. I met with four people, including one of the owners. I even asked about the negative reviews online and was assured they were from a specific couple of problem employees that were let go under bad terms due to poor performances. Following the interview, I was contacted almost immediately to start negotiations on the position being offered to me. Once again, they were very understanding and they worked with me through a few specific requests I made based on the rather large decrease in salary I agreed to. They said how much they liked me, looked forward to working with me, thought I would do great in this position. When I received the offer letter, I was a little nervous about the way the expectation of late hours was written being that I have young children at home and it was not made clear up front about the possibility to work late multiple days during each week. In speaking with my contact at the company, she assured me I was under the wrong impression about what the verbiage meant and agreed to re-write the offer letter. Next I received an email about changing my start date, so I simply asked if it would be easier to start off fresh in the new year. I the received an email saying they were rescinding and there was no explanation. When I asked multiple times for an explanation, they told me it was because the negotiations were one sided and they gave me everything I asked for with nothing in return. I think taking a large decrease in salary (about $8k), less vacation, giving up a $4000 yearly bonus and taking less holidays throughout the year is more than giving something up for a few of my own requests. They never even came back to me before rescinding to give me chance to agree to what they were more comfortable with. I should have listened to the other reviews I read online warning about this company. It was easy to think they were untrue after meeting the people at this company, but after the way they handled this situation, I am starting to think all I fell for was a good act. My advice is just to be very careful about considering employment with this company. They did not follow through with what they said they were offering...it's very unfortunate too because they really had given me a good feeling about working with them. It's scary that there can be such a drastic change. I wonder what would have happened to me if I would have taken the job.....
