I would like to start off by stating the broad image, in my personal view, the latest and also the long-term FMCG innovation trends would be the digitalization. In the information society, data is now the new petroleum that fuels the growth for corporations. The logic is simple, the sustained growth can be best achieved when we understand exactly what consumers need now and later, which in turns allow FMCG players to design the best product for the customers. For customers, once their needs are being observed and predicted correctly, their consumption would tend to be swift and hence convenient. The innovation I would like to talk about is the 3D-print personalized face masks developed by one of the leading players in FMCG market. The process is simple: first, using the app to scan user’s face to get the exact measurement of user’s face to determine the size of the mask; then, based on the answers users have provided, the system will recommend the unique combination of ingredients allocated to different zones on the face; and finally, click on order and the face masks will be printed mwithin 15 minutes. This customized product has certainly made consumption more convenient since it is tailored according to the user’s characteristics, and therefore should provide the unique and exact solution for the customer and therefore there is no need for customer to further compare with other competing products. Of course, the customized products are limited by the production capacity, yet the process can be referred to mass production design as well. By collecting a large sample of data including that personalized information, manufacturers can design range of products satisfying different segments of population, which can be used for mass production for the whole population.
