Received an online coding assessment shortly after applying.
A week after that, got contacted to schedule the Power Day interview, which is 3 1 hour interviews within 4 hours: Technical, Behavioral, and Case.
Technical was pretty chill. It wasn’t a LeetCode question, it was more of a banking-related coding question: best data structure to store data you receive, and then it builds off of that. The interviewer was really nice and answered my questions well.
Behavioral was typical STAR questions and then follow up questions based on your answer.
The case interview is what made me put ‘Negative Experience.’ It all depends on the interviewer you get, and I got the worst you could imagine. He was very arrogant and got openly frustrated and spoke in an aggressive tone when I didn’t know something right away. This threw me off during the whole case interview, which made me not perform at my best.
Capital One provides resources to prep you for the case interview, and those resources stresses how important it is to ask clarifying questions. However, the interview would treat every question I asked as a dumb question (by literally laughing at them) and give unhelpful answers.
Anyways, the case interview consisted of discussing a business-tech related problem and doing some math and calculating if something would fit within a budget. The second half was looking at code based on the information in the first half, and debugging it so it functions correctly. It felt more technical for a case interview.
If acting condescending towards your teammates is a common occurrence in software engineering, then the case interview was a great simulation to test candidates with.
Just hope you get a good interviewer and you’ll be fine though.
